July is UV Safety Month

· Although the warmth of the summer sun is greatly enjoyable, it can cause immense damage to our bodies. · We are all aware of the damage caused to our skin by UV rays and that the best solution is to wear a high SPF sunscreen and cover any areas of our body that are exposed to direct sunlight whenever possible, but did you know how damaging sunlight can be to our eyes? · Eye exposure to ultraviolet rays can lead to eye damage that includes vision impairment or even vision loss. o Extensive or intense exposure to UV rays can cause "sunburn" on the surface of your eye. o Excessive exposure to UV rays is connected to the development of many eye conditions including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. · Protection options for eyes include: o Wearing sunglasses that block out 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays o Wearing a wide brimmed hat that keeps rays out of your eyes. This tip is brought to you by St. Mary''s Regional Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.
